I’ve never been good with numbers

I’m very pleased as in cat-got-the-cream-smile to get every question correct on this 8th grade (3rd form) maths test that was forwarded to me :-D

I didn’t Google anything (like what is the difference between median and mode anyway?) and I used only calc on my PC and it took me 15 minutes.

I’m stoked!

If you hate shopping …

Another facet of the personal shopper – http://www.hateshopping.co.nz/

The twins are here!

Two more girls, arrived about 3 hours ago in Brussels. So now we have 6 nieces and our parents have no grandsons!

Georgia, Caitlin, Amy, Sarah, Mia and Holly.

Cakes are good for you

I have always found the sign on the side of the display unit holding cakes and other sweet treats at Thorndon New World to be puzzling.

It says ‘nutritional information available on request’ – this implies cakes are good for you i.e. they have nutrients which in itself usually means good things. I suppose such a sign is there so that people know whether peanuts or flour or other things that you could be allergic to are in the cakes. In which case wouldn’t ‘ingredients information’ be a better sign? Or maybe the sign is there so that if you’re watching your weight you can find out how many calories are in a lamington vs. a cupcake?

More on phrases …

I try to avoid use of the phrase ‘bear in mind’ or is it ‘bare in mind’ because I can never remember which bear/bare is right. I’m quite good at using ’be mindful’, or ‘taking into account’ or similar.

I’ve tried to think of the origins of the phrase, to work out exactly what it means to see if I can figure out which spelling to use. What does it mean anyway? If it means ‘keep in mind’, or ‘be alert’, or ‘be prepared’ then I would argue that either bear or bare is relevant – I’m sure there are many situations where bare (in terms of naked) can be just as alarming as a bear when encountered unexpectedly.

Whoa – that affogato they gave me at Fuel this afternoon really has sent my brain off into a spin!

By the way, it’s ‘bear in mind’.

Bear [in mind] (v):
To hold in one’s mind; remember

Bear (n):
Big omnivorous mammal of the family Ursidae

Phrase of the day …

referential integrity

Courtesy of a DBA colleague of mine. Sounds cool.

Kumutoto

Found out what all the banging is about across the road – Kumutoto – general redevelopment of the North Queen’s Wharf area where the new Loaded Hog and One Red Dog already are. Other things to come seem to be promenades and lowered walk-ways. I found a map and description of the current building site.

I don’t know if knowing what the banging is about makes it any more tolerable!

Random sites

Websites I’ve come across over the last couple of days:

  • From Chris’s blog – seatguru.com – descriptions of seats and services on multiple airlines … except Thai Airways which is a bit of a long haul fav of ours because of the relatively low airfare.

  • Cool weather pictures from right here in NZ.

  • Cannot believe this is still out on the web! This place has not been on the market for 20 months now. Still freaks me out to see how the previous owners laid it out.

Crabs in the office

A couple of girls in the next pod were just discussing that one of them managed to do a ‘crab’ at yoga last night. The other one just couldn’t do it. And another person that came along could sort-of do it. So I had a go as well – being the yoga queen that I am – and I was the best at it!!

(Obviously this is not me … it’s just to illustrate what a yoga crab is!)

Post Office Square

They’re digging up the cobbled courtyard outside the Hotel Intercontinental – the very helpful sign says “Environmental Enhancements” – whatever they are!! Perhaps some kind of water feature judging by the concrete foundations and pipes that are beginning to appear.
