12 things to do in New York

Someone asked us for a top 10 to do in New York – The Mister came up with this amazing list of a dozen things in a few minutes – just had to share it. It’s a great list.

  • Shake Shack in Madison Square Park
  • Wine & dine at Eataly
  • Broadway show (at least one – and do one near Times Square since you obviously need to go there as well)
  • Sit in Central Park and people watch (make sure you visit the Bethesda Fountain and maybe row a boat on the pond)
  • Go to a Yankees game (Mets suck)
  • Go up Rockefeller Center (you’ll want to do the Empire State but the Rock is cheaper and gives you views of Central Park and a view of the Empire State)
  • Go on the Staten Island Ferry (it’s free – takes you past the Statue of Liberty and gives you great views of the Financial District)
  • Visit Ground Zero – make sure you book for the memorial site – you can’t just go there (I believe it’s free to book)
  • Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (and then have dinner at Henry’s End in Brooklyn Heights)
  • Walk the Highline (in Chelsea) and then visit Chelsea Market for a coffee (Ninth Street Espresso is amazing)
  • Do a Circle Line boat tour around the whole island (not just a half tour – get the full Manhattan experience)
  • Shop (5th Ave, Tiffanys, Macys, Bloomingdales etc)

Oh, better post a nice memory of New York while I’m at it (July 2010) 🙂

Primo list. I’ll share my list that I give people, with some overlaps…

• Statue of Liberty – book it now if you can, sells out month’s ahead. Walk up to the crown. It’s an INCREDIBLE experience.

• Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. If you are only going to walk part way, start from the Brooklyn side, it has much nicer views. Also walk along Brooklyn Heights promenade. Walk around Court and Smith streets (great shopping) in Carol Gardens, go to Frankie’s 457 for dinner.

• Go to the Met Museum at night. Less crowded, they a live orchestra playing and the vibe is magical.

• Diner in Williamsburg – easily in my top 5 meals I’ve ever eaten in my life. Great atmosphere too.

• La Esquina – best tacos in my life, and from someone from San Francisco that’s saying something. Recommend the take away, not the restaurant.

• Cafe Habana – get the Sincronizada Toluca (OMG mouth is watering just typing that)

• Original Ray’s Pizza on Houston – real NYC slice

• Grand Central station – the terminal & go to the Oyster club. Enter or exit thru the Chrysler building’s beautiful lobby.

• Top of the Rock – amazing, stunning views

• Walk and shop in SOHO and LES – even if you don’t buy anything the shopping experience is like a tour of the most incredible merchandising design you’ll ever see.

• Highline – this will be on everyone’s list. It’s nice and cool and fun, but if you skip it you won’t miss much.

OMG now I want to go back there even more than ever – we’ve done a lot of things on your list as well Philip – thanks for sharing.

Have also had a request for The Mister’s top 10 shops so that will be interesting if he gets around to providing it!
