We walk past this every day on the way to work. Needless to say there’s usually an interesting collection of people hanging around outside waiting for it to open. San Francisco is turning out to be a crazy town!

This isn’t a particularly good photo so it certainly won’t support the high rating I’d give our dinner at the bar at the Bonny Doon vineyard’s cellar door in Santa Cruz. When we were having coffee at Verve Coffee Roasters I overhead a couple of locals talking about how great the restaurant was with a new chef and that they had a very cool community table idea. A bit of quick Googling we found they did a couple of sittings each evening, being Saturday we weren’t sure of our chances but as it was just out of town on the drive back to San Francisco we thought we’d call in hoping to be in time for the early sitting so we could get on the road for the 1.5 hour drive back.
When we got there the restaurant was fully booked but the greeter lady said we were welcome to do a tasting at the bar and try something from the limited bar menu – just a few items from the full menu. We looked at the menu and it might’ve seem limited to ordinary folk but for me it had the only couple of things on it I’d want anyway – pizza and potatoes.
Plus we love sitting at the bar. We got up on the stools and had a very knowledgeable chap run us through a wine tasting and bring us a selection of dishes from the menu. Roasted fingerling potatoes & aoili, some kind of speck, cheese & onion pizza and green salad with crumbled hazel nuts. Also I got to drink something non-alcoholic from the vineyard which gives them a huge thumbs up – they had some recently harvested grape juice – delicious!

Tracked down Verve Coffee Roasters when we were in Santa Cruz yesterday. I’ve seen their beans around San Francisco a bit but not in any of the cafes we’ve been to, and they’re featured in my San Francisco Best Coffee app so it was definitely on the list if we’d had enough sand and pumpkins. We had to drive quite a way from the beach to find them and as with a lot of the cafes in the US that are worth going to, it wasn’t necessarily right in the shopping district but rather on a long residential/commercial street that felt a bit like Motel Mile in Rotorua.
Worth the stop for sure. The interior was very cool with the glass cabinet of sweeties and the hip baristas behind the counter.
The coffee tasted good – fairly strong but we needed the pick up because it was late afternoon and I’d been waiting a while for my next fix.
While there I overheard a couple of locals talking about a great place for dinner just on the way out of town so we took the unofficial tip and had a fantastic dinner before driving home along Highway 1 in the dark (no reflective roadside markers!)

It’s been a few years now since The Mister and I watched movies with great regularity – the fact that we can download TV shows means that we usually always have something to watch. We’ve kept our DVD collection growing though. For a while there I kept a notebook handy near the couch and if we were watching a movie and someone said their phone number I wrote it down – the notebook was recycled in the move but I kept the page of numbers.
Most phone numbers in movies (well American movies) start ’555′ … here’s a few I collected, although it seems I didn’t write down who they belonged to very often! Seems 555 0199 is popular from the movies we watch.
