Fire alarm – 22 floors up

Arrived to work this morning and the building had recently been evacuated because of a fire alarm. The lifts had not come back online so the foyer was crowded. Depending on one’s mood, working on the 22nd floor has both advantages and disadvantages in this situation.

  • Advantage: no-one actually expects you to walk up 22 floors. I’m not sure what the cut-off point is though – 10 floors?

  • Disadvantage: if you’re not feeling particularly patient, waiting for 45 minutes for the lifts can be extremely frustrating. Especially if you just had coffee, or are too new in your job to recognise or strike up random conversation with your co-workers.

Very interesting to watch people arrive, figure out what’s going on, find a pod of people they know and decide what to do next.
