It’s taken me a couple of days to recover from this bit of news hence only writing about it now … Nikau have taken date scones OFF the menu 🙁 🙁 🙁 Obviously I was distraught AND paranoid that it’s because The Nikau Snitch gave me the recipe. At least he told me over the phone before we went in on Sunday that they were gone so that I didn’t have a melt down and burst into tears in the middle of the cafe. He offered up blueberry and yogurt as a replacement, kept one aside for me just in case I wanted to try it when we went in for lunch.
Sigh.
So in I went. Straight to the glass cabinet. And sure enough. NO DATE SCONES. God I must have looked like a little girl standing in front of the fish bowl looking at her dead fish. Got a cuddle from the big boss anyway!!
So, blueberry and yogurt scones:
- Messier to eat – got a blueberry stained thumbnail
- A bit smaller so didn’t feel so chocca after it
- Was SO like a cake it felt a bit naughty to have it for lunch
- Was light and fluffy and tasted very good
- I do recommend them, honestly 🙂
Date scones RIP – thanks for the good times xox

Maybe they could make you a special one for every Sunday? 😉
Even though I didn’t have them as regularly as you did, I still absolutely loved the Nikau date scone and revered it as the best date scone in Wellington (a distant second being the Chocolate Fish date scone which is also RIP because there is no longer a Chocolate Fish!).
So I was also very saddened by this news. I fear that I never truly appreciated them enough – I can’t remember the last one I had now!
(For those that have had the privilege of eating at Nikau will know that it’s akin to them dropping their kedgeree from the menu).
Oh My GOD what are you going to do…. The Wishbone dates scones are divine and they are low fat (not that you need low fat though)!!!
