May 23rd, 2007 — Out and about, Random thoughts
Just when central Wellington is struggling to keep pedestrians and motorists focussed on where they should be walking or driving to avoid yet another person being run over on Willis Street …

… we now have a huge TV at that very intersection.

All bright and flashing like being in Hong Kong or Vegas. Even while they were setting it up today showing nothing much but the Windows restart screen and hour-glass cursor people were slower to cross the road and motorists slowing for the lights were gazing up.
I wonder how long it will be until the first nose-to-tail. I’m not a pessimist, just ‘practical’ 😉

Always when we go to Awakeri there are tui in the backyard, clambering around on the flax right up close – it’s really amazing to see. And now we can see one in our city backyard every day atop the new Forest & Bird headquarters.

I think they were a little behind schedule. The by-pass and associated direction changes were supposed to be in effect from 6am this morning. It was interesting watching it unfold. There was much consulting of papers – the paint-by-numbers for the arrows I suppose.

Another post-daylight-savings summer’s day – just lovely for a stroll around town.

My hunch was right! Ghuznee Street *is* being reversed when the second stage of the city by-pass is completed this weekend.
Thanks to my colleague (he who takes arty photos that the Mister aspires to match and he who brings his visiting parents to dinner) I can show what I think the intersection of Ghuznee and Victoria streets will look like from Sunday morning.

(Black is existing flow, orange is new)
I think the Mister and I will camp out with our breakfast on Sunday morning and see how the traffic copes. Everyone arriving by car to the Victoria Street Sunday market will have an interesting time!

Found the Bond St guy who actually took the photo. Seriously. We’re getting a copy 🙂 V. excited.
UPDATED:
It’s home! On the floor waiting for us to be brave enough to hang it. It’s so mesmerising. The guy also gave us a book of his photographs which is very cool – just extraordinary photos of ordinary things that he’s taken on his travels. It’s called GEOGRAPHY.

Had a bit of a social day yesterday – out and about at the Cuba Street carnival, to a baby shower, a farewell bbq, dinner and the nighttime parade.
So many people out in the streets around Cuba Street:

Hundreds of hands as this crowd broke the record for the most people doing synchronised actions to a song:

Finally went up the mysterious stairs to Truffle – an amazing French wine collection:

Took in a really spectacular view from the farewell bbq venue in Brooklyn:

The Mister’s arty nature shot (if our friend can take amazing photos of bumblebees then so can he!):

Is Ghuznee Street going to be reversed when the by-pass is finished? A couple of days ago I spotted traffic lights hung but covered pointing in the other direction on Ghuznee Street.

By looking at changes marked on the proposed route map, I see no changes indicated for Ghuznee so perhaps not … but why the new lights?
Oh, unless they’re replacing the lights on the other side of the pole and this is how they keep them until they’re ready rather than leaving them lying on the footpath…
February 5th, 2007 — Out and about, Work
Not a soul out and about at 7.30am on New Zealand day.

I on the other hand was on my way to work.
