No more yoga and potato chips

Just found out today that the place I go for yoga is closing after 15 years (not that I’ve been going that long) due to a ridiculous rent increase AND I have to go on a low sodium diet. What a day. Obviously I’m nervous about finding somewhere else to go for yoga, I’ve gotten to trust the guy with hanging me upside down, making me stand on my head, pushing my leg over the back of head where it just won’t go etc etc. I don’t want to go somewhere else with strangers where you have to pray or chant or drive there. And as for the low sodium thing. It appears that sodium doesn’t necessarily equal salt and it turns out that my major (because they’re my favourite) food groups all contain sodium – bread, peanut butter, potato chips and caffeine. God. Caffeine. However, the specialist said that if I do good on getting salt out of my diet then I won’t have to give coffee up altogether. Am allowed decaf though. Yum Yum.

In the short term it’s going to be a life of fruit and nuts with in a body in the shape of an office chair. Sigh.

67

Bum. XRO just dipped near lowest ever to 0.67 – don’t know why I look. The novelty of being involved I suppose.

Scarpetta paperback

Just heard from Jiff all the way over in Hawaii that the latest Patricia Cornwell novel Scarpetta isn’t out in paperback there until later this year – so no nice-smelling American book for me this trip.

People’s coffee

We’re becoming rather partial to People’s coffee. Am not saying it yet but sometimes I feel a bit over Fuel – palette might be changing from their peppery blend although quality can be a bit up and down. Plus we’re getting excellent coffee out of machine at home at the moment (Supreme beans) so that’s a lot for any cafe to stack up to – ha! Anyway, keeping our eyes peeled for People’s cafes. So far:

  • People’s ‘garage’ – Garret Street (excellent)
  • Plum – Cuba Street (was OK when the old staff were there when we went there last, about 18 months ago)
  • Mon Amie – Bond Street (not bad)
  • Clark’s – Wellington Library (burnt & milky in a HUGE cup)

Twitch

Damn, my eye twitch is back. More sleep? More coffee? More holiday?

New Westpac

Westpac has got some kind of plastic new age frontage over the weekend – we saw the boxes lying around in the rain on Saturday and wondered what was in them.

Turning to the left

Switched my desk around today – new office buddy wanted a more ‘collaborate working environment’ – so my second monitor and laptop have changed positions. Feels very weird looking to the left for secondary activities. I’m sure it was the same degree head turn when the monitor was on the right but it feels like a greater degree on the left! It’s quite nice the change of scene – like a little cubby hole in the corner – it does mean I look out into the face of oncoming visitors so I have to look welcoming and approachable. Will also have to watch myself stuffing my lunch into my face with one had while working with the other, and no more crying into my keyboard on bad days! It is good not having my back out into the room.

House with an orange roof

There’s a house with an orange roof that we always look at out our window. It looks like it’s on top of the world and I bet has a great view. One day we even drove all around Kelburn to see if we could find exactly where it was and see if it was really as big as it looks on the skyline – it’s on Central Terrace and yes it is.

However, over the last couple of days, the framework for a new building at the university that to date has only had a couple of floors on it, has had some huge vertical beams join it. So it looks like the university is getting yet another new building to blot our quite green landscape.

Kind of hard to see in this photo but the new thing is going to obscure our house with an orange roof!

Willis Street demo 3

Hairdresser gossip provides more information about the Willis/Boulcott St demolition … apparently big trucks came one night and took the apartments on stilts away to the Hutt somewhere. The way he tells it, all the furniture and chattels in the apartments were just shrink wrapped/tied down and each apartment was picked up as-lived-in and moved. I’m wondering how they got them onto the motorway from there though – there are tight bends and an underpass to get through … I guess they closed the roads and went the wrong way up the slip road to The Terrace.

17 storeys of Telecom ‘campus’ are going there it seems.

Sparrow fact

At Gotham this morning sparrows were hopping around the floor looking for crumbs. I was referring to them as he or she depending on which one hopped over really close. The Mister wanted to know if I was randomly calling them he and she. He didn’t know that sparrow fact! So I told him – boys have a black bib, girls have none. Now he’s wondering what *important* bit of information got bumped out of his brain so that that gem can reside there. Eyeroll.
