My brain sides are uneven on the side of preferring function to form. Our new desks at work are very styley – dark brown ‘wood’. However, they heat up in the sun and are very hot to lean on and act as a little heater in an office that’s aready fairly hot with sun streaming in; and they show up every greasy finger print … not that I have greasy hands … just general touch marks.

Finally we moved into a ‘real’ office. There’s quite a bit of space at the moment … which means that instead of hearing what everyone’s saying because they’re practically sitting on top of you, you now hear them echoing around the office even from other rooms. Just me and one other in this room for now. Lovely.

December 7th, 2006 — Out and about, Work
Went to a work do last night, a sneak preview of our software for VIPs – great night. The speeches and presentation were upbeat and snappy, the Mister did very well with his demo in his Denny Crane shirt and a fantastic buzz was created. No technical glitches, no jeans and t-shirts, blue cocktails, lots of comments about my orange patent leather shoes, team bonding in the biggest space the entire team has ever been in and lots of big names around town.
Now we batten down the hatches and work like never before to deliver what was presented.
First day at < >

Survived my first day at < > (apparently not quite yet for public consumption)
- 14 people in a 60 sq/m studio apartment
- There’s an orange hand towel in the bathroom
- Went end to end through the product and churned out 15 pages of notes/user help
- Second monitor flickers and keyboard does not have USB cable
- Great having the Mister right there to ask all those new-girl questions
- Not so great having the Mister there to explain stuff because way too easy to cry when I can’t understand!
- Yaaay jeans
- Yaaay Fuel really close (except I can’t sneak out and get a coffee without the Mister placing his order!)
- 10-hour day on day one!
Still on the change theme

Resignation etiquette
November 27th, 2006 — Random thoughts, Work
There are certain things you just expect in a grown up work environment when you resign. On the same project team within about 3 weeks of each other, 2 people have resigned and I’m flabbergasted at the response.
Firstly, the announcement:
Mine wasn’t a resignation per se but rather a decision to not see out my contract. As I always do, I discussed the pros and cons of doing this with my manager in an effort to make a decision. Whilst I was fairly certain that I was going to go, it was not decided at the point that my manager gave early warning to he who manages the IT program of work, as my possible departure needed to be added to a raft of other resource issues on the project. He, who is a self-centred show-off took it upon himself to go around the Melbourne arm of our project and announce that I had resigned. I was appalled! As far as I am concerned a possible resignation eluded to in good faith is a basic human confidence that he broke in order to buy allegiance with the aforementioned troubled project team by blaming my departure as the straw that broke the camel’s back. I went over his head and resigned on the spot in person stating that I refused to work for someone like that.
Secondly, the reaction.
When my departure was announced there was no reaction. Nothing. No-one either in our team meeting or afterwards said anything. No congratulations, no questions, no comments. So I felt pretty awful about the whole thing and still do. Completely ostracised. When the second person in our team to depart announced their resignation (today) the same stony silence fell. And this was probably even more of a surprise to everyone as the ‘leak’ mentioned above did not occur. I mean what kind of project team is this? Whether or not you like the person or are glad to see the back of them, you at least acknowledge their resignation.

Have just seen half a dozen people on segways in Civic Square and some kind of segway leader. They were doing a few moves, practicing breaking etc, then they have set off in single file towards the harbour. Perhaps there’s a ‘Tour Wellington’s Waterfront on Segways’ programme available.

Well, actually out the other side of the building where I don’t sit … a cruise ship. Not the biggest we’ve seen but I think it’s the first of the ‘season’.
Doesn’t that blue blue harbour belie the weather we’ve been having lately?
