Snow warning

For everyone who brushes off Wellingtonians when we say “it’s so cold I’m sure it’s snowing” – the Metservice today has issued a snow warning for the region!! I’m sure it won’t be in the city but still, when do we ever have the hail/snow graphic on our weather page?!

And right now, Metservice reports the wind chill as -1 C! About to head out to work in an hour so that’s going to be horrible!!

Stormy Wellington

The rain and southerlies have been pretty relentless over the last few days and the weekend was particularly cold and nasty.

Here’s an amazing shot that I captured from a video making the rounds on Twitter at the moment of the storm yesterday – I’m pretty sure this is looking across Lyall Bay from the airport to the houses on the hill in Kilbirnie/Melrose – that wave looks enormous and as though it’s going to hit the coast road at full force!

Chews Lane apartments

We’ve arrived to Gotham the last couple of Saturdays by coming along Harris Street – gives a different view through Chews Lane to Willis Street. You can see the shell of the building still left standing at the end of the lane, in the building site between Willis and Boulcott streets. Seeing as they’ve carefully taken out all the windows it must be staying.

And bit by bit they’re taking the scaffolding and netting off the Chews Lane apartments. They’re pretty dominant on the Willis Street skyline now.

Paper flower

On the way to work this morning I saw that someone had tried to pretty up the road works that seem to be taking permanent residence outside our office – they’d made a paper flower to adorn one of the marker cones!

Winter sun

One of those gorgeous blue but very cold days yesterday so we wrapped up and got out to feel the sunshine somewhere. Found a gorgeous spot on the pavement outside People’s Coffee in Garret St where we’ve starting going on a Saturday for a takeaway if it’s fine.

Also noticed on our drive around that they’ve started the first of the pumpkin structures at the airport – I think they’re going to be part of the new international terminal. They’re going to be quite orange and pumpkin-like based on the sketches I’ve seen in the paper over the last year or so.

Wayne Funny Brady

Went out last night, on a school night, gasp, to see Wayne Brady’s stand-up show. I’ve seen him a bit on that old show Who’s Line is it Anyway? and a few episodes of Don’t Forget the Lyrics – he’s pretty funny and talented. It was truly amazing to see him in person – he is so quick with the funny stuff. And boy, he can dance. He also did fantastic impressions of In Sync, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger and Prince by singing songs that included one-liners suggested by the audience like ‘you can never have too many sheep’ or ‘glitter is the herpes of the craft world’. God he was funny.

And the show was audience participation of course, in the style of Who’s Line is it Anyway? – I was rather pleased we got to sit upstairs away from the action … I feel so sorry for the somebody’s mother that had to get up and make sound effects for the scene being played out! I mean what noise *does* a boomerang make anyway!

So, when the audience was being coached in how to make noise and shout out, we were asked to shout out answers to a couple of easy questions.

What’s your favourite colour? I shouted out ‘orange’ (of course) along with the rest of the Town Hall shouting out their colours so we made quite a bit of general noise and I couldn’t clearly hear ‘orange’ (except for the Mister shouting it too bless him) or hear myself say it.

What’s your favourite movie? I shouted, louder, ‘Fifth Element’, but still not loud enough as all I could hear was louder jumbled shouting as everyone started to find their voice, including the Mister as he said something else.

So, the last question, I was really fired up by now to be heard. What’s your favourite book? I let it rip and positively screamed ‘TWILIGHT’, and sh*t, that’s all you could hear! That lead to some joke about Wellingtonians not being big readers, and I was pretty embarrassed that our entire section were looking at me!!

Another very funny, quick and smooth reaction from him was when his offsider was seeking information from a guy in the front row upon which to build a skit around.

Offsider: … and what do you do sir?
Man: I’m an analyst.
Offsider: OK. And what do you analyse?
Man: Well, the supply and demand of stuff I guess.
Offsider: What kind of stuff.
Man: … ummmm, I dunno, any kind of stuff. Chocolate.
Wayne (stepping forward in very smoother manner): And here I am. You demand it. I supply it.

He got such a roar for that. It really was an amazing show. Except he now thinks that Wellingtonians don’t read and all work for The Government because of the 15 people he interacted with or got up on stage, 13 of them worked in government departments!

Town closed tomorrow morning

I hope Gotham is open in the morning. ANZAC day and most everything else is closed until 1pm.

Snaps to Sunglass Hut

The Lambton Quay store. The little screw that holds the glasses arm on fell out of the glasses I bought in New York last year – took them into that store and the lady fixed them on the spot, no charge, and said I could call in any time if they got loose again! Excellent service!

Gorgeous weather

It’s another lovely blue day in Wellington today, just how I like it, looks warm but when you go outside there’s a very slight autumn coolness in the air.

Had a long wander through town and around the harbour yesterday.

Saw a very orange bus and trailer.

And took an arty photo of the ivy up the side of the Museum Hotel. Soon it will be full coppery autumn colours.

Nose to tail

Got stuck in a queue in the Mt Vic tunnel this afternoon and when we got out on the city side we saw that a nose-to-tail accident was causing a bit of delay. A rather well-loved white Subaru was parked up on the footpath and the Mister reported that the front was definitely dinged – no other cars in site so probably wasn’t that bad except for the rather large number of police and an ambulance that were in attendance. And then we drove by the entrance to the high school a little further down and 2 cars were parked in there with police all around – it’d been a 3-car concertina and one of them was a beautiful new black Porsche 911 Carrera. My God. From the whip-around glimpse I got the guy looked horrified. The guy in the white car on the footpath looked ruined. Imagine ramming the back of a Porsche. Not long after when we came out of Moore Wilsons, what did we see parked 2 cars down from us. The Porsche. They guy and his ballerina daughter had just got out of the car. The guy looked back at the damage and they walked off into the shop – he looked sick. We hung back and surveyed the damaged. The spoiler was in-tact and the boot was still able to shut but it was totally banged in. With white paint all over the place. Yikes. Watch your following distance.
